To her mind, replicating this number was a means of taking both her grandmother as a person and her grandmother’s legacy forward. Cohen draws meaning from her tattoo in that it signifies her grandmother’s history and her own identity as a descendant of Holocaust survivors. Over the course of Auschwitz’s existence, more than 400,000 prisoners were assigned serial numbers. Cohen is one of a number of the children and grandchildren of Holocaust survivors, more specifically survivors of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp, who have chosen to replicate their family member’s tattoo on their own body.Īuschwitz, in Nazi-occupied Poland, was the only camp where numbers were tattooed on those prisoners not selected for immediate death. The influence the Holocaust has had through the generations runs deep, and how each descendant of survivors remembers the past and its legacy varies hugely. Her grandfather finished every crumb from every plate. The legacy of starvation was never far from the surface. It permeated family life, as did the self-imposed interdiction on talking about the past and the absence of relatives. It was just always there.Ĭohen, a 41-year-old living in Israel, felt as if she had experienced the Holocaust herself, in a different cycle of her own life. Rony Cohen doesn’t remember any particular moment when she first became aware of the number tattooed on her grandmother’s arm. Without it being an advertised feature, Smart PDF Converter Pro also installs itself as a printer driver, which means if you’re looking at a help page, say, you can print it to a PDF and use that as a reference document: What I do want, though, is the ability to print to PDF on Windows, just as I do on my Mac. Still, I have never found I needed those capabilities. The latest version of Smart PDF Converter Pro has a bunch of other PDF tools, if you need to do more interesting things with your PDF document, either as an extraction or editing or tweaking it: Wondering what other formats you can convert that PDF into with the app? Here’s a list: Notice it retained font colors, typefaces, and styles rather than just a dumb text dump. How’d it do? Here’s that PDF as a Word doc, as converted by Smart PDF Converter Pro: I choose “Convert” and without any further clicks or action, it launches and converts the PDF document into a Word file: Once the program is installed, a few new options show up in the contextual menu when you’re looking at a PDF file, as shown: In both instances the application worked perfectly. In addition, I wanted to test whether you could add SPCP as a print device and access it from anywhere within the Windows system. What I wanted to do was use Smart PDF Converter Pro to extract all the text from the PDF file and convert it into a Microsoft Word document that I could then utilize as a source if I were working on a report on the same subject. To test it I dropped it into my HP laptop running Windows 7, and grabbed a sample PDF document off the net, a document entitled “China’s Video Game Industry Annual Review”. The good news is that the application is fast, easy to use, and has a lot of useful features. I switch back and forth and quite often find that it’s very useful to send an unmodifiable document to a client or customer, a PDF rather than a Word file or HTML page. ![]() ![]() That’s why I was interested in learning more about Smart PDF Converter Pro when the company contacted me. This means that if you want to work with PDF files, you’re going to need to spend some money getting a commercial application that adds this set of features to your PC. This capability is completely missing from the Windows world, whether you’re running Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7. Sure, Adobe sells its Distiller program, but on a Mac I would estimate that 95%+ of your document to PDF requirements are already included in the operating system. Want to save something as a PDF document? Any app that can send a document to the printer, be it a Web page, a screen capture, or a nicely formatted report, can just as easily do a “Save As PDF”, and even specify what image quality should be used. One of my favorite features of Mac OS X is how PDF (portable document format) tools are tightly integrated into the operating system. Colour, too, contained one of his greatest secrets: his love affair with Sophie Dupuis. He did countless scenic views of the events that transpired around him during his long career. Fontaine – often considered the serious, ‘less colourful’ foil to the more creative Percier – loved painting in watercolours. Fontaine’s model appears to show everything necessary for reconstructing an octagonal room from Consulate France, but excised is the issue of who the room was for, and where it was located (we can guess that it was probably for someone in the First Consul’s entourage).Īnother glance at the model shows a pointed interest in developing colour across a range of surfaces and materials. It never gives, nor can it give, a total picture of a project’. Its power to represent is always partial, always more or less abstract. Linked and fully folded up, the drawing shows the walls of the room forming a hermetically sealed, dollhouse-like space.Įvans used the developed surface to argue that architectural drawing, far from being conceptually autonomous, was a historically and socially porous artefact that ‘makes it possible to see some things more clearly by suppressing other things: something gained, something lost. Fontaine kitted this model out with tabs. Favoured by Robert Adam in his domestic commissions, the technique ‘became a way of turning architecture inside-out, so that internal rather than external elevations were shown’. By contrast, this coloured model appears somewhat archaic – especially if we consider Robin Evans’s claim that the ‘developed surface’, a term he used to describe a method of representing rooms with the walls folded out as adjacent surfaces, was primarily a phenomenon of mid-18th-century Britain. His views featured in their most famous publication, Recueil de decorations intérieures (1801–12). Though he designed many interiors for the elite of post-revolutionary France with his inseparable partner Charles Percier, interior projections and perspectival views were his forte. Paper models are rare among Fontaine’s oeuvre. Described as a music salon because of the instruments on the wall, this unusually shaped space more probably represents a small cabinet or bedroom (beds were not a common feature of music salons). Between the windows, a commode is tightly wedged between two green panels decorated with winged torches and vases. These reflect the view of two windows, just opposite, dressed with yellow drapes. On a cross axis to the entryway, an alcove with a bed covered in yellow silk is set between two mirrors. On the opposite strip is the fireplace and mantel, above which a large mirror is stationed behind a gilt-bronze clock and two vases under glass jars. The doorway is decorated with white stucco ornaments of vases and musical instruments. When raised vertically, each strip shows a portion of the inside walls. Eight strips of paper (one with two flanking side strips) splay outwards like tentacles from the points of a star drawn on the wooden octagonal floor. It represents a simply decorated room coloured in shades of apricot and light green. French architect Pierre-François-Léonard Fontaine made this cut-out paper model of an interior in or before 1804, the year in which his famous client, Napoleon, became emperor. The square and compass have long been architecture’s symbols of the trade, but practitioners sometimes used scissors to shape space. That said, IBCs are generally used as offshore holding companies or as corporate entities to support activities across a number of jurisdictions. The specific banking services that are offered to each IBC client will depend on their specific banking requirements, deposit and account balance, activities, and timelines. Likewise, individuals should consider the ongoing reporting and disclosure requirements that they may have to their home country if they own or control a company outside of their home country. In other words, individuals should be looking for an IBC that directly supports their citizenship, residency, and broader tax planning strategy. Instead, each potential corporate structure needs to be carefully assessed in the context of each individual. Additionally, the specific benefits that offshore lawyers and service providers promote are not always applicable to everyone. Importantly, while IBCs can offer benefits, they can also be expensive to set up and expensive to maintain. Depending on the business activities and regulatory environment, it is possible that IBCs will face taxation locally regardless of where incorporation was completed.
